Norvik Azarian is an Associate in Freeman Mathis & Gary’s downtown Los Angeles office. Mr. Azarian’s practice focuses on professional liability, errors and omissions, and appellate law. He also has prior experience representing administrators, insurers, and managed care entities in ERISA benefits matters, including claims for benefits, breach of fiduciary duties, and payor-provider contractual disputes.
Mr. Azarian also has extensive experience in handling complex appellate matters. As a law student, Mr. Azarian externed for Judge Alex Kozinski at the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Also while in law school, Mr. Azarian was selected to join Loyola’s Ninth Circuit Appellate Clinic and successfully obtained a published opinion in his client’s favor in an appeal involving Fourth Amendment issues of qualified immunity and the right to bodily privacy. See Ioane v. Hodges, 903 F.3d 929 (9th Cir. 2018). As a practicing attorney, Mr. Azarian has handled numerous appeals in the California Courts of Appeal, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. Notably, Mr. Azarian obtained a denial of a petition for writ of certiorari in the United States Supreme Court in a novel ERISA matter involving a circuit split. See Cho v. First Reliance Standard Life Ins. Co.,852 Fed. Appx. 304 (9th Cir. 2021), cert. denied, 142 S. Ct. 1118 (2022). In the California Courts of Appeal, Mr. Azarian has worked on matters involving claims of slander and Anti-SLAPP motions for public individuals as well as questions of first impression regarding personal jurisdiction and California’s Sister State Money Judgments Act.
Mr. Azarian received his bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of California, Irvine and his law degree from Loyola Law School, where he graduated in the top 15% of his class.
